doctorates from: Our recent hires have and are expected to continue
contributing to an improving research record that the Department of
Economics is explicitly pursuing. The Department's faculty has recently
published in high-quality journals (see here
and here) including: The College of Business, of which the Department of Economics is a part, currently plays a pivotal role in the ongoing campaign to improve the status and recognition of the University. The College of Business recently secured a $2 million donation to fund the new Goolsby Leadership Academy. The Academy will fund faculty chairs, provide scholarships to outstanding students, and facilitate campus/business community exchanges. This fund is expected to be matched with additional funds at a rate of two to one. In 2002, the College of Business Administration initiated an Executive MBA (EMBA) program in Taipei, Beijing and Shanghai. The program is now the largest of its kind in Mainland China and provides increasing opportunities for faculty to teach abroad and to Chinese cohorts who study in Arlington for a year. In 2007, the College of Business Administration launched Executive MBA program in Fort Worth. The Department of Economics seeks to expand the breadth of its research faculty. The additional breadth is expected to promote the marketability of our popular Masters program, the synergies of research amongst the faculty, and to help the department continue its improving reputation for high quality research. A recent trend is for our Master's students to write theses with anticipation of collaborative publication with the research faculty. The Master's program is considered a terminal degree by approximately 80% of the students, with the remainder pursuing doctorate studies at various programs, most recently the University of Kentucky and Southern Methodist University. We anticipate new faculty will contribute to our aspirations of attaining and adding to our growing nationwide reputation as among the highest quality research departments with a terminal masters program. UT Arlington's student enrollment is growing and transitioning. Total enrollment is about 25,000 students (about 6,000 graduate students). Enrollment growth has slowed recently as the university continues its transition toward a traditional four-year fulltime student body from a predominantly transfer student and part-time student commuter campus. The University opened a new dormitory Fall of 2004, named after alumna Kalpana Chawla who died in the February 2003 crash of the Space Shuttle Columbia, and additional on-campus housing is currently planned and budgeted. The percent of students who living on campus is now larger than that for UT Austin. In Fall 2007, phase I of the planned 190,000 square feet Maverick Activities Center was completed. UT Arlington's research stature is also growing. UT Arlington is one of about 150 universities that the Carnegie Foundation classifies as a comprehensive doctoral graduate instructional program. The University's research and sponsored activities funding has increased by 80 percent since 2001. In Spring 2006, the University completed construction on the new Science and Physics building which houses state of the art laboratories and the largest planetarium in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Additional recent construction on campus includes a new Manpower Training and Continuing Education Center, a new Art School Annex, additional Greek Housing construction. The university recently obtained budgetary approval for a new engineering building with construction slated to begin in 2008.
