Fall 2007

Summer 2007

  • Former UT Arlington Associate Professor, Craig Depken and former UT Arlington student, Paul Dorasil, had their paper, "The Luck of the Texan: An Empirical Analysis of Texas Lottery Games" accepted at The Journal of Gambling Business and Economics. This paper stemmed from Paul's honors thesis last Spring.

  • The department welcomes Dr. Mahmut Yasar, new assistant professor.

  • Craig Depken was quoted in a recent article about ticket scalping in the The Lousville Courier-Journal.

  • Congratulations to Paul R. Dorisil, winner of the Department's 2007 Best Undergraduate Paper Contest and $1,000 scholarship for his paper, "Luck for Sale: How a Private Firm Might Run the Texas Lottery."  Congratulations again to Paul as his paper also won the Arthur A. Smith Memorial Award Recognizing Student Excellence in Economics from the DFW Association for Business Economics (DABE).

  • Recent alumni have education options for Fall 2007.  Congratulations to:
    • Chuka Ikokwu (BS, 2005) - Accepted to MBA programs at MIT's Sloan School and UCLA's Anderson School.
    • Arun Narayanasamy (MA, 2006) - Accepted to Ph.D. Finance programs at U. Syracuse and UT Arlington.

  • The department announces the hiring of new assistant professors Dr. Jeffery Desimone (Ph.D., Yale U., 1998), currently at the University of South Florida, and Dr. Mahmut Yasar (Ph.D., U., Illinois, 2002), currently at Emory University.

  • Courtney LaFountain presented her research, "Core Equivalence for Residential Land Use Models," at the Spring 2007 Midwest Economic Theory and International Trade Meetings at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in April.

  • Mike Ward presented his research, "Teaching Digital Piracy," at the 5th International Industrial Organization Conference (IIOC) in Savannah, GA in April.

  • Craig Depken presented his research at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV in March.

Fall 2006

  • Mike Ward presented his research, "The Effect of E-Rate Internet Subsidies in Education," at the ZEW Workshop on Internet Policy in Mannheim, Germany in December.

  • Mike Ward was interviewed for a story on tipping airing on ABC affiliate WFAA on Oct. 20, 2006.

  • Craig Depken presented his research at the Southern Economic Association meetings in November.

  • Çagatay Koç won the Georgescu-Roegen Prize for 2006 awarded by the Southern Economic Association to the author of the best academic article published in the Southern Economic Journal.

  • Courtney LaFountain presented her research at the 10th INSIE Meetings in September.

Summer 2006

  • The Department bids farewell to James Bang (now at Virginia Commonwealth U.) and Dennis Wilson (now at U. Western Kentucky).

  • Research by Craig Depken and Dennis Coates (at UMBC) was reported in a news story by ABC Affiliatte WFAA (Dallas) (more here).

Spring 2006

  • The department announces the hiring of new assistant professors Dr. Aaron Smallwood, currently at the University of Oklahoma, Dr. C.Y. Choi, currently at the University of New Hampshire, and Dr. Dr. Shushanik Papanyan, currently a visiting assistant professor at UTA. (April 2006)

  • Bill Crowder, Craig Depken, and Shushanik Papanyan presented at the November Southern Economic Association meetings

  • Craig Depken's blog Heavy Lifting was the focus of local columnist O.K. Carter in the Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005 Ft. Worth Star Telegram.

  • Added late: Graduating senior Crystal Bates was featured in a Shorthorn article in the Spring 2005 Graduation Edition

  • Incoming graduate students are strongly urged to attend one of the seminars offered by the UTA Libraries. The seminars provide information about the various databases and services that the library offers. More information here.

  • The Department bids farewell to Dr. Ghazi Duwaji and thanks him for almost 30 years of service.

  • The Department announces two new classes in the 2005-2006 academic year. Dr. Courtney LaFountain will be introducing undergraduate ECON3304 Public Sector Economics in the Fall and graduate ECON5332 Public Sector Economics in the Spring of 2006.

  • The Department announces a scheduling change effective Summer 2006. ECON5338, will move from Fall to Summer semester starting 2006. ECON5337 and ECON5329 will move from Summer to Fall semester starting 2006.

  • The Department announces a change in the graduate advising for the Masters of Economics Program. Effective Fall 2005, Mr. Roger Wehr will be the advisor and contact for the Masters of Arts in Economics Program. Dr. Craig Depken will remain the PhD coordinator.

Spring 2004

  • Graduating senior, Karen Cler, was named oustanding economics student for the metroplex by the Dallas Economics Club. She won for her paper "Effects of Eliminating the Double Taxation of Dividends on Labor Income" which had previously won a UTA Economics Department Best Paper Award and Scholarship.

  • Friday, April 23 at 2:30, the second Kuemmerlein Lecture of the year will host Dr. Jennifer Troyer of UNC Charlotte who will present research on "Supply Regulation in the Nursing Home Industry." The paper will be available at .

  • Friday, April 2nd at 2:30, the first Kuemmerlein Lecture of the year will host Martin Gaynor who will talk on "Physician Incentives in HMOs." The paper is available at . The room haas changed to COBA 245 to accommodate the larger than normal turnout we hope for. [Press Release].
